I-9 Alert: ICE Performs Largest Single-state Immigration Raid in U.S. History

Last Updated on October 23, 2019 by G. T. HR

Are your I-9s in Order?

You are likely aware of the largest single-state immigration raid in history that was performed on August 7, in Mississippi. This is further proof that employers hiring undocumented workers continues to be a hot topic. Worksite investigations focusing on I-9 enforcement increased 255% from FY 2017 to FY 2018. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency recently performed the largest single-state immigration raid in U.S. History in Mississippi. The sweep resulted in the arrests of approximately 680 people that were undocumented immigrants.

In this time of increased awareness of undocumented workers, it is imperative that employers properly perform the I-9 requirements.

Failure to do so can lead to significant penalties not only for hiring undocumented workers, but also for incorrectly filling out the forms. Penalties can be as high as $2,156 per form. If you need clarification on rules and regulations concerning this topic we have a valuable article that can help.

Employers can avoid big fines by developing a comprehensive I-9 compliance program, which should include training, self-audits and an investigation-day action plan. (SHRM)
