2025 Updates to Form I-9 and E-Verify: What Employers Need to Know

Last Updated on April 14, 2025

Staying compliant with employment eligibility verification requirements is an ongoing responsibility for employers. With recent 2025 updates to Form I-9 and E-Verify, it’s essential to understand what’s changed and how it may impact your hiring and onboarding processes. Here’s a quick overview of the latest developments and what your organization needs to do to stay on track.

2025 Updates to Form I-9 and E-Verify

In 2025, recent updates to Form I-9 and E-Verify have occurred. As of January 20, 2025, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released a revised edition of Form I-9 (dated 01/20/25, expiring 05/31/2027), which includes minor updates such as revised statutory language and an updated DHS Privacy Notice. Employers may continue to use previously valid forms until their expiration:

  • 08/01/23 edition, valid until 07/31/2026
    • Employers using this form must update their electronic systems with the 05/31/2027 expiration date by July 31, 2026

Additionally, beginning April 3, 2025, E-Verify updated the terminology for employee status. The previous category “A noncitizen authorized to work” is now labeled “An alien authorized to work” to reflect statutory definitions. Employers must ensure they select the correct corresponding status in E-Verify when completing the case creation process, even if the language on the employee’s I-9 differs slightly.
